In 1863 the American artist Martin Johnson Heade journeyed to South America in order to observe and paint the various species of hummingbirds that inhabited the hills of Brazil. While there he studied hummingbirds in their natural habitat.The collection of paintings that Head entitled "The gems of Brazil" depict pairs of iridescent hummingbirds positioned on branches and twigs often guarding a nest with eggs. The compositions are always set against the lush hills and beautiful sky's of the Brazilian jungles.

When M.J.Heade returned to the United Sates his collection was in great demand, but he refused to sell them. Instead he took orders and made copies of the originals for the rest of his life.

Today these delightful paintings are among the most sought after historic paintings by important collectors, museums, and dealers. Heade offered these paintings in a variety of sizes but favored a 10 x 12 and 12 x 16 format for most of the "Gems."
